How to Disable Exclusive Mode in Windows Sound Preferences

In Windows, some audio applications will take exclusive control of an audio device’s driver while in use so that other applications can not play audio through that device at the same time. This can prevent speech from Grid 3 eg while the web cam is open. Disabling the Exclusive Mode options in Windows Sound Preferences can resolve this by preventing audio applications from taking exclusive control of the Apollo’s driver.

To disable Exclusive Mode, follow the directions below:

In Grid 3->Menu->Settings->Speech click the ‘Configure’ button for the voice that is giving problems, then on the next page click the ‘Configure’ button under the list of output speech devices.

1. The Windows ‘Sound’ dialog opens. With the appropriate output device selected, click the Properties button to open the Speaker Properties dialog.

2. On the Speaker Properties dialog go to the Advanced tab and un-check the option to “Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device”

3. Close down all dialogs.

Once complete, restart your computer for the changes to take effect.
