User Account Control in Windows Vista for The Grid 2

This article is only relevant to people running Windows Vista and have who modified their User Account Control settings.

Most users should ignore this article.

Background

Windows Vista introduced several new features to aid security. One of these is “User Account Control”, or UAC. This changes the way some programs behave if they try to write to certain directories (most notably below Program Files). Early versions of The Grid 2 were not fully compatible with UAC and so it was necessary to disable it. The Grid 2.3 and later is compatible with UAC and it is no longer necessary to disable it (existing users can leave their settings alone).

Details

For most users UAC is not an issue. However, if you have a machine on which User Account Control was enabled and you subsequently disable it (for example because of compatibility problems with other programs), you may find some of your Grid 2 users or wordlists become lost. To recover your users you should do the following:

Enable User Account Control (Go to Control Panel, and type “user account” into the search box and follow the links.)
Start The Grid 2 and save all users as grid bundles.
Exit Grid 2.
Disable User Account Control.
Start Grid 2 and then import the Grid Bundles.
