How do I use more than one language in Grid 3?

Grid 3 supports over 30 languages with over 100 voices available and localized grid sets.

Languages are set per grid set and not per user which allows one user area to have grid sets using multiple languages.

To add content in a different language, you can either make a new user in that language, or add in specific content into your existing user.

Creating a new user in a different language

  1. Whilst in Grid Explorer, browse to the menu bar (three lines, top left corner) and select Users
The Grid 3 menu
  1. Select New to begin creating a new user.
The New option when in the Users area.
  1. Select Get Started and you will be met with a screen where you can name your user, select a voice and also set your language.

Note: this is the default voice and language for your new user, it can be changed at any time via the Grid 3 settings.

The New User screen.
  1. Press Next to be prompted to sign into your Smartbox account, either sign in, or hit Skip in the lower left corner.
  1. You will then be prompted to select your content to load into your user on start up. Any categories chosen will automatically load all grid sets currently translated in that category.

Note: these grid sets can be removed and added in later if required.

Adding content in other languages into existing users

If you already have a user set up and just want to add specific grid sets from another language, these can be added into your Grid Explorer window separately, without the need to make an entirely new user.

  1. In Grid Explorer, browse to the menu bar (three lines top left) and select Add grid sets
The Grid 3 menu
  1. Using the drop down menu in the lower left corner – select the language you wish to add content for.
The language drop down in the Add grid set menu.
  1. The Add grid set menu will translate automatically into your chosen language and allow you to add translated content into Grid 3.

Installing voices

For correct pronunciations, you will need to change your Grid voice to one appropriate for the language your content is in. While voices can have many different accents, they only support one language to enable correct grammar and predictions. Grid has a selection of over 100 voices to choose from and also supports a number of voice banking services.

For information on how to install voices visit the following article:  How do I change my voice in Grid 3

Changing your voice when opening a grid set

When a grid set is opened, Grid will try to match the language of the grid set to the voices installed. For example, if you have both the English and French versions of Super Core 50 as long as you have a French voice installed, Grid will automatically switch upon opening the French version of Super Core, and switch back when you open the English version.

When making your own grid sets, remember you can change the language via the menu bar - Settings – Grid set, using the Language drop down.

The Grid Set Settings menu.

Changing your voice while using a grid set

It is also possible to change voice whilst in a grid set using the Change voice command. You may want to import some specific French phrases into an English grid set, or have a home page with French core words and another with English.

The Change voice command can be found inside the Speech settings category when adding a command to a cell in Edit Mode (menu bar – Edit grids). It can be added to a jump or change grid set cell to ensure the voice changes to match the content being shown.
