Data changes are coming to Grid

At Smartbox we are committed to providing and creating the best AAC software. To help us achieve this, understanding our users and how they interact with Grid is vitally important.

In the next Grid update coming this September, you will notice a pop-up asking if you would like to accept or decline data collection. By accepting, you agree to Smartbox collecting anonymous data about how you use Grid.

This data will play a vital role in shaping the future of Grid by helping us:

  • Improve our content
  • Develop exciting new features
  • Make our software more stable
  • Identify any issues quickly

What is Anonymous Data?

When we say Anonymous Data, this means we cannot identify you or your account with the information we collect. The data that we collect is analysed as a whole to help us identify trends and themes.

We have been careful to ensure that the information we do collect cannot be used in conjunction with any other data services that you may use, such as Smartbox Accounts to discover your identify. Data is anonymised at the point of collection on your device.

What will we collect?

Session length (the amount of time Grid is open) – This helps us understand how long Grid is being used on a daily basis.

If you are using Early Access – Early Access is a preview of the latest version of Grid. Knowing if there are any issues in Early Access is critical for our development team.

If Grid is licenced – Some users may be using the Grid trial or Remote Editing.

Crash information – If Grid crashes it is important for us to know how this happened so we can fix issues swiftly.

Which access methods are used – Grid supports eye gaze, switches, touch and voice access. Collecting this data will help us tailor our content appropriately.

If symbols are on or off – This helps us understand how people are using Grid to communicate.

Which Grid sets are installed and used – Knowing which grid sets are popular and used frequently can help us prioritise our development and identify any issues or gaps in our range of grid sets.

Grid version number – We update Grid on a monthly basis. Knowing how many people are using the latest version, or when an error occurs with a previous version, improves our support and development process.

Operating system – Both Microsoft and Apple update and fix their operating systems frequently. Knowing which operating system you are using can help us troubleshoot and fix problems more effectively.

Location (to city level) – Knowing where our Grid users are in the world will help us tailor our service to different regions.

We won’t track anything you say in Grid and all these changes are in line with our new privacy policy which you can read more about below.  If you change your mind, there will be the option in Settings to accept or decline data collection at any point. We will not share any of your data with third parties.

Please note that the user who accepts or declines data collection, does so on behalf of any other users of that device.
