Here in the Smart Lab, where we develop our Grid 3 software, we were recently forced to abandon our desks and make do without the internet for a Thursday afternoon. Rather than huff around complaining about a lack of up to date news, we sat down for some creative storytelling activities using a pile of Story Cubes.

story cubes

Story Cubes are dice covered in interesting images and prompts to help you create your own tales, be it a rocket ship to Mars piloted by a lost dog or a superhero tale of a magical apple. Either in groups, with children or if you are just seeking some inspiration, they can be a fun and creative activity.

This got us thinking: How could we use Grid 3 as a storytelling device, either helping to tell unique stories, letting people write their own tales with prompts or creating whole choose-you-own-adventure tales.

We set about making some proof of concept grid sets building on branching structures and narratives in the Grid 3 editor and by the time our jug of coffee was empty, we had some fun new storytelling tools!

We’ve uploaded our choice based tales to Online Grids for people to explore and play with, but why not explore other storytelling techniques? If you do make something in Grid 3, let us know!
