Book a Simple AAC Workshop for schools
Our half day event for schools covers how to start using the Smartbox Simple AAC framework and includes a Simple AAC tool kit.
Please get in touch to talk about what we can offer you.
What is Simple AAC?
Simple AAC is a framework created by Smartbox that brings together the key ideas about supporting early AAC learners with their communication.
Each letter of Simple AAC represents something you can do to help AAC learners.
Topics covered on the day
Using the Simple AAC framework, we will take you through what symbol AAC is and get started with it right away. We’ll spend the day learning strategies and be practising different techniques in small groups.
- What is ‘communication’?
- What does ‘AAC’ mean?
- What is core vocabulary?
- Being a good communication partner
- Myths and realities of implementing AAC
What to expect
Our Assistive Technology Specialists will take you through what symbol-based AAC is and how to start using it. They will take you through the theory and some commonly held misconceptions.
You’ll also get a chance to try out AAC implementation techniques straight away in small groups.
In the afternoon session you’ll be introduced to Grid for iPad, our flagship AAC app. You’ll learn how to find and add existing resources, as well as how to edit them in detail to personalise them for each individual.
Who are these days for?
This workshop has been designed for anyone who is in contact with a young person with complex communication needs. Including:
- Teachers and teaching assistants
- School staff
- Parents and guardians
What do I need to bring on the day?
You don’t need to bring anything. We will provide all the materials needed for the training.
Do I need any prior AAC knowledge to attend?
No prior knowledge required – the day is designed for beginners.
What if I don’t use Grid?
While we will use Grid in this workshop, the content we cover can be applied to any robust core vocabulary system.
How does this training differ from Getting Started with Grid?
This workshop covers how to start using any robust core vocabulary system with a young person. Our Getting Started with Grid events focus on using and editing our AAC software.
Can I use the techniques I learn to support any AAC user?
This training will help you to support any young person with complex communication needs. It’s not suitable for those supporting literate AAC users that communicate with text-based resources.
Can I get a refund if I cancel?
We offer full refunds for cancellations up to 1 week before to the event.
Can I pay by invoice* rather than credit card?
