Using AAC from Shetland to Shropshire

Leanna Smith is a Grid Player user all the way from Lerwick in the Shetland Islands. She has used our communication aids for many years and now attends a college in Shropshire. Here is her story:

I love talking but people don’t always understand so then I like signing but that doesn’t always work so I use other things to help me say things.

When I was in school in the Shetland islands I used my Viliv. I am now at college in Shropshire. I use my iPad when I am working in the Farm Shop and in my functional skills groups helping me with Maths and English.

I can chat to my friends, write emails to my family and say things at work. I wouldn’t be able to do that if I didn’t have Gridplayer. Gridplayer and The Grid 2 have helped me work on my own more and be more confident. I live a long way from my college – over 600 miles! So to get home you have to get 2 planes and I have flown home by myself.

I felt confident doing that and knew I could talk to people if I needed to say something with my Viliv or iPhone. I hope one day that I will work in Dad’s shop in Lerwick in the Shetlands and use my iPad or iPhone to talk to the customers.
