What is Talk Pad 2nd gen and who is it for?
Talk Pad is a new lightweight communication aid created by Smartbox. It’s built on iPad and is designed for anyone who needs a durable and portable communication aid. Available in two sizes, 8-inch or 10-inch, Talk Pad has multiple positioning options and can be accessed with touch, using a new and improved keyguard or up to two switches.

How does it differ from the first generation Talk Pad?
Talk Pad 2nd gen has lots of new and exciting features that have been developed over the course of the last 3 years.

New features include:

Can I still buy the first generation Talk Pad?
In the UK, this will replace the first-generation Talk Pad from Smartbox, and as always we will continue to support users who have our ‘first-gen’ Talk Pad. Find resources and support on Smartbox Hub for help with your existing device.

What software does Talk Pad use?
Talk Pad comes with our Grid for iPad communication app, however the device can be used with any iOS-based communication software. You can try Grid for iPad with our 30-day free trial.

Which iPad models are compatible?
Choose from a Talk Pad 8 (8.3″ 6th gen iPad mini) or Talk Pad 10 (10.2″ 9th gen iPad).
We will soon be introducing a Talk Pad 10 built on the 10.9″ 10th gen iPad.

Can I get a Talk Pad 13?
The Talk Pad 1st gen built on the iPad Pro was discontinued in May 2023. Demand for the large screen size was very low and therefore we are sticking with the two more popular screen sizes for our second-generation device.

Is Talk Pad a Class 1 medical device?
Yes, Talk Pad is a Class 1 medical device.

Does Talk Pad support eye gaze? 
Talk Pad is not available with eye gaze.

How do I charge Talk Pad?
Talk Pad comes with a custom power adaptor that splits into two charging cables: one for your speaker and one for your Talk Pad.

Why is there a new app for Talk Pad? 
The Smartbox Link app is available for free on the app store and is used to update the Talk Pad firmware. We recommend installing the app so it’s ready for when your firmware needs updating.  

Can I use switches?
Talk Pad can be used with switches. We have added two switch ports to allow for use with wired switches, and each switch port has an LED indicator to show when a switch is activated.  Support for switches is currently available via the iOS accessibility options.

Can I mount both sizes?
Yes, both the 8-inch and 10-inch size devices can be mounted onto a stand or wheelchair.

What’s new about the keyguard?
The Talk Pad keyguard now features a keyguard frame that fits neatly over your Talk Pad screen, providing a user-friendly installation process with no tools required.  Key benefits include:

• Easy to fit with no tools required 
• Quick removal for editing your grid set and cleaning your device

What support is available for someone with a new Talk Pad?
There are many ways to get support with your new Talk Pad:

Is Talk Pad covered by Warranty?
Yes, Talk Pad includes 3 years SmartCare.

Is Talk Pad available in the United States?
Yes! We are very pleased to be offering Talk Pad via our sister company, Talk To Me Technologies, who will be selling the Talk Pad: Wego Edition.
