From a young age, I had the opportunity to experience speech therapy firsthand, which allowed me to gain valuable insights into the field. However, some of those experiences were unpleasant and uncomfortable. This motivated me to pursue a career as a speech therapist, with the goal of providing a more positive and supportive environment for children. My approach is centered around fostering a safe and respectful space where children feel seen, heard, and empowered to take communication risks without judgment. I want them to understand that there is nothing inherently wrong with the way they communicate, and my role is to facilitate their growth in a nurturing manner. After working within America’s early childhood system, I recognized the presence of systemic barriers and bureaucratic red tape that can hinder the ability to truly meet the needs of children and help them thrive. This realization prompted me to take the entrepreneurial step of starting my own business, where I could have greater autonomy and flexibility in providing tailored support to my clients. One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned in using Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) effectively with clients is the importance of learning alongside them. I openly acknowledge that I’m continually expanding my knowledge and skills in using these programs. By embracing a collaborative and humble approach, I create an environment where my clients and their families feel comfortable exploring and experimenting with communication, which in turn enhances my understanding and ability to support them more effectively. One of my favorite features in Grid is the ability to customize and incorporate Symojis. I find them to be a powerful tool for facilitating communication, especially with younger children. By customizing Symojis with words and short phrases tailored to each client’s needs, I’ve witnessed remarkable back-and-forth interactions unfold. Even for children who may initially show less interest in core vocabulary, the Symojis have proven to be an engaging and effective way to pique their curiosity and encourage communication. 1. To customize Symoji’s for Gestalt Language Processors. 2. To create visual language displays. 3. To easily switch between grid sets.
